Appraisal Institute of Canada, AIC 102: Introduction to Professional Practice Course

The Appraisal Institute of Canada’s (AIC) AIC 102: Introduction to Professional Practice (AIC 102: ITPP) course is a requirement for individuals interested in becoming a Candidate Member of Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC). The course is a requirement for both the CRA and AACI designations.

The course is designed and presented by designated AIC Members and is delivered through UBC’s online learning platform. Students may begin the course at any time and proceed at their own pace, providing they complete the course within one year of registration.

Course Components

The course is divided into four modules:

  • Module 1: The AIC
  • Module 2: Ethics and Report Writing Standards
  • Module 3: Technical Standards
  • Module 4: AIC Policies

Students must complete Module 1 first, then may complete the other modules in their order of preference.

Quiz

To successfully finish the course, participants will need to complete a quiz at the end of the course achieving a passing grade of 60% or higher, within one year of registering in the course. If a grade of 60% is not achieved on the quiz, the participant must rewrite the quiz before proceeding. A $25 fee applies per rewrite attempt.

Once participants have successfully completed all of the modules and the quiz, proof of competition is automatically uploaded to the Appraisal Institute of Canada’s database provided you entered your AIC member number during registration.

As per AIC policy, AIC 102: ITPP satisfies the professional development requirement in the cycle it was completed. You will NOT need to complete the Professional Practice Seminar (PPS) in the cycle in which you complete AIC 102: ITPP. For example, a student completing AIC 102: ITPP in 2024 or 2025 will NOT need to complete PPS 2024, but will need to complete PPS 2026 during the next educational cycle.

Other valuation organizations may recognize the AIC 102: ITPP course as a demonstration of Canadian valuation standards for designation or workplace purposes. The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) accepts the AIC 102: ITPP course for Canadian residents as meeting the appraisal standards requirement for IAAO designations. Note that IAAO members seeking recertification are recommended to instead register in the Professional Practice Seminar (PPS). Non-AIC students wishing to register in AIC 102: ITPP must first obtain an AIC membership number, as this is required for the course’s administration (please note this AIC membership number is required only for registration purposes, this does not require students to qualify for membership in AIC).
