The Montalbano Centre for Responsible Leadership Development
There’s a growing expectation that today’s leaders demonstrate responsible leadership, yet how leaders actually do this is not well defined or understood. At its core, responsible leadership development is about personal development. You cannot lead others until you lead yourself. We’re here to educate and train our students on how to contribute to this important conversation so we can collectively address the most challenging issues of our time.
Meet the Academic Director
Jon Evans is an Assistant Professor in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Division at the UBC Sauder School of Business. His research interests focus on how leader impression management influences both leadership perceptions as well as the attitudes and behaviors of followers. One stream of this research investigates how stereotypes affect leader evaluations, and another stream looks at how different social images influence follower behavior.
His work has been published in top management journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science and Personnel Psychology. It has also been featured by The Washington Post, Forbes, Financial Times, The Daily Mail, The Seattle Times and Harvard Business Review. He is passionate about taking an interactive approach to leadership development at UBC Sauder, which has recently been awarded by the Academy of Management for its evidence-based approach.

Two important questions emerge from the growing expectation that the leaders of today need to responsibly incorporate the legitimate interests of those who can be affected by the activities of the organizations they lead. The first is identifying the leader behaviors and mindsets that contribute to being a responsible leader. The second is identifying the process through which leaders become more responsible. We are excited to pursue these questions through our outreach, education, and research activities.
