Background

Climate communication plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and driving action on environmental issues. However, striking the right balance between urgency and optimism presents an ethical challenge. While fear-based narratives can highlight the severity of climate risks, they may also lead to anxiety, disengagement, or paralysis. Conversely, overly optimistic storytelling may downplay the urgency of the crisis. Crafting effective climate stories requires ethical considerations to ensure they inform, empower, and inspire meaningful action without misleading or overwhelming audiences.

Research Objectives

This study aims to explore the ethical challenges in crafting climate narratives that balance fear and hope. It will examine how different storytelling approaches influence public engagement and behavior, analyze the ethical implications of framing climate issues through crisis or optimism, and assess strategies for creating narratives that inspire constructive action. The findings will provide guidance for communicators, policymakers, and activists seeking to develop ethical and impactful climate messaging.
