Lorne Whitehead

Professor of Applied Physics and Director of the HIBAR Research Alliance, a research alliance enhancing fundamental research excellence in service to society. His research on the interactions of electromagnetic fields with micro-structured surfaces has led to more than 130 US patents, and his technology is used in many computer screens and televisions. He has helped to start six companies based on his research.

Associate Professor of Archival Science and lead of Blockchain@UBC, an industry-academia research and education cluster focused on blockchain technology. Her current research is focused on risk to the availability of trustworthy records, in particular in blockchain-based ecosystems, and how these risks impact upon transparency, financial stability, public accountability and human rights.

Post-doc
Christopher Rowell joined the Centre as a Mitacs Accelerate post-doc in September 2017 after completing his DSc at Aalto University, and continues to be involved in the centre's activities since departing in 2021. He researches the creation of new markets around electric vehicle technologies and blockchain.
Chang Lu
Post-doc
Chang Lu joined the Centre as a Mitacs Accelerate post-doc in March 2019 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta. He researches the adoption of distributed trust technologies in the healthcare sector in his current role as Research Manager at Blockchain@UBC.

Dennis Ma graduated the Ph.D. program in OBHR in 2023. His research interests include organizational theory, social networks, family business, immigration, and entrepreneurial life course research in his current role as an analyst with Statistics Canada.

Davide Ravasi

Davide Ravasi (UCL School of Management, UK) researches interrelations among organizational identity, culture, and strategy in times of change. He has also investigated how designers work and how they contribute to strategic change and innovation in small business and large corporations. He is interested more generally in cultural-cognitive processes influencing how new objects and practices come to be, and whether and how they are valued and adopted by individuals and organizations. He is particularly interested in traditional and new forms of craftsmanship and craft production. He visited the Centre to serve as a Mentor for the OMT Writing and Reviewing Workshop.
Derek Harmon

Derek Harmon (University of Michigan, USA) researches how meaning structures—collective and taken-for-granted mental models, categories, or institutions—emerge, change, and influence collective and individual action. He tends to use language as a window into studying these processes, and relies on a combination of archival work, content analysis, and lab experiments. Much of his research examines these considerations in a financial market context, with empirical studies involving the Federal Reserve, initial public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions. He visited the Centre to serve as a Mentor for the OMT Writing and Reviewing Workshop.

Emily Block (University of Alberta, Canada) researches generation (by organizations) and interpretation (by external constituents) of symbols. Symbols are the formal and informal structures, language, practices and features of organizations that make up a large part of how they communicate to various organizational stakeholders. Hovig Tchalian (Claremont Graduate University, USA) studies the impact of language and communication processes on organizations and markets. His research focuses especially on framing and sense-making processes as well as language devices such as analogies. He researches how the “social conversation” around innovations helps them get accepted by applying a mixed-methods approach using both traditional and newly developed “big data” techniques. She has researched the social movements that promoted acceptance of organic food, and those that led to the creation of a low-power FM radio service in the United States. Kam Phung (York University, Canada) researches the disruption and perpetuation of grand societal challenges in and around organizational settings, including large corporations, start-ups, and new forms of organizing. He is particularly interested in the social and political dimensions of technology and innovation in the context of social and environmental issues and has studied issues such as climate change, modern slavery, and stigma. He visited the Centre to advance his research on the mobilization of blockchain-based solutions for climate action.

Dev Jennings (University of Alberta, Canada) research areas include innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurship, and the natural environment. He visited the Centre to build on its collaborations with the Interpretive Data Science (IDeaS) Group by coordinating the hybrid IDeaS 2022 Workshop: Interpretive Approaches to Data Science in Management, advance his joint research stream on ecosystems and rendering, and explore collaborations with the HIBAR Research Alliance.
