FAQ for international students

Check out answers to some of the most asked questions from our international applicants.

What are the admission requirements for international students?

International students need to submit academic transcripts, an English proficiency test score that meets our minimum requirement, two references, a GMAT/GRE score that meets our minimum requirement or a GMAT/GRE waiver if eligible, written and video essays, and a virtual interview if they pass the first stage of evaluation. The UBC JD/MBA doesn’t require full-time work experience.

See our Admission Requirements for more details. All applicants should meet the UBC JD admission requirements and follow their admission process.

Am I eligible for the English proficiency test waiver?

To be considered for a waiver of the English language exam requirement, your transcript or degree certificate must clearly state that English was the language of instruction for your entire degree program. If this is not indicated on your documents, you may alternatively request your university to issue an official letter confirming that English was the language of instruction throughout your studies.

Please upload the relevant supporting document as part of your application. Your waiver request will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee as part of the overall evaluation process.

Can I work while studying?

The UBC JD/MBA is a full-time, intensive program, and we generally don’t recommend students to take on part-time work. However, the IRCC does allow international students to work up to 24 hours per week during academic terms, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. After graduation, students are eligible for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), allowing you to gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Check the UBC International Student Guide for the latest updates from IRCC.

Are scholarships available for international students?

Yes, we offer merit-based scholarships specifically for international students. Additionally, there are external funding opportunities and financial aid options that our admissions team can help you explore.

See the full list of scholarships.

Am I eligible for a GMAT/GRE waiver?

Candidates must meet requirements outlined here and submit a Statement of Qualification. GMAT/GRE waivers are not guaranteed, and approvals are made on a case-by-case basis. If a waiver cannot be granted, applicants will receive a notification that a GMAT or GRE test will be required for their application to move forward.

How does the study permit process work?

After receiving an offer to be admitted to UBC Sauder, our International Student Advising team will provide guidance to incoming graduate students on the study permit application process, including personalized consultations, timelines, support with gathering required documents, and application best practices.
