UBC IMBA at 20: A celebration of legacy and future impact

For two decades, the UBC International MBA (IMBA) program has been shaping global business leaders. On November 10, 2024 alumni from across the world reunited for a spectacular evening at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Shanghai, celebrating the program’s 20 year-long enduring impact and future aspirations.

The milestone event brought together graduates from across the globe to reconnect, share their journeys, and reflect on how the UBC IMBA experience has shaped their leadership and careers in the global business landscape.

Honoring a Legacy of Collaboration

The evening opened with reflections from Darren Dahl, Dean of UBC Sauder School of Business, and Dr. Fangruo Chen, Dean of Antai College.

“Tonight, we celebrate 20 years of collaboration and friendship. Together, we’ve helped shape countless business leaders. Here’s to driving even more innovation on the global stage," said Darren Dahl.

Dr. Chen emphasized the deep roots of the partnership: “Our collaboration spans over four decades, and the IMBA program has played a crucial role in developing leaders who embody excellence and creativity.”

Looking ahead: The future of business in an AI-driven world

A highlight of the evening was a thought-provoking keynote by Chris Tao, Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft Greater China and long-time UBC Sauder lecturer. His talk, Thriving in the Age of AI, sparked conversations about how emerging technologies are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities for innovation.

His message was clear: the next generation of business leaders must embrace change, leverage AI, and drive responsible innovation in a fast-evolving world.

Reinforcing the significance of the event, Christopher Loan, Consul for Political, Economic, and Public Affairs at the Canadian Consulate in Shanghai, spoke about the program’s role in fostering and strengthening the economic and cultural ties between Canada and China.

A skyline tribute: The Bund light show

The highlight of the evening? A breathtaking tribute that lit up the Shanghai skyline. As attendees gathered along the Bund, the iconic Citibank Building illuminated with a custom light show, marking two decades of success and global impact.
Alumni gathered on the waterfront, capturing the breathtaking display as it lit up the skyline. Photos and videos flooded social media, reflecting the pride and energy of the moment.

For many attendees, it was more than just a celebration; it was a reminder of the program’s global impact and the lifelong connections forged through UBC IMBA.
