The Centre for Climate and Business Solutions is launching a call for projects to reduce UBC Sauder’s largest Scope 3 emissions categories. This fund is open to all UBC Sauder faculty and employees.
Focus areas
Commuting
42.29% of Scope 3 emissions
Example initiatives could include:
-
Incentivize carpooling programs and track participation through ride-sharing apps, sign-up logs, or surveys.
-
Support EV adoption and track progress by the number of EV commuters, charging station usage, or kilometres logged.
-
Promote transit use and track through subsidized U-Pass sign-ups, survey data, or proof of usage.
-
Encourage active transportation such as walking or cycling and track participation through sign-up challenges, apps, or surveys of commuting habits.
Purchased goods and services
42.62% of Scope 3 emissions
Example initiatives could include:
-
Shift to low-carbon office supplies or services and track progress through procurement data and emissions factors.
-
Pilot vendor sustainability assessments to prioritize lower-emission suppliers and track by percentage of sustainable vendors engaged.
-
Reduce paper and printing usage and track through printer counts and supply purchases.
-
Explore reusable or circular procurement options and track by comparing baseline purchasing volumes against reduced purchases.
Funding available
-
A total of $101,052 is available.
-
Applicants should clearly indicate how much funding is requested and how it will be used.
-
The fund will be split between successful proposals.
Eligibility and requirements
-
Projects may take the form of initiatives, pilots, or applied research, as long as they demonstrate potential to reduce emissions in one of the two focus areas.
-
Applicants should include a statement of the expected impact (e.g., projected emissions reduction, cost savings, improved reporting, or improved practices).
-
Awarded project leads must report back within one year on outcomes—whether the initiative was successful or not, and key lessons learned.
-
Projects must be implemented and completed within one year.
Evaluation criteria
Proposals will be assessed based on the following:
-
Measurable impact: clear methods to track outcomes and quantify progress.
-
Replicability: potential for the initiative to be scaled or adopted more broadly across UBC Sauder or UBC.
-
Alignment: direct contribution to reducing commuting or purchased goods and services emissions.
-
Feasibility: likelihood that the project can be completed successfully within the one-year timeframe.
