Reconnect and learn with fellow UBC Sauder alumni community members at our next business analytics network event!

Building on the momentum of last year’s inaugural Business Analytics Alumni Reception, we are pleased to bring our community together again for a fireside chat with Candice Chan, Vice President of the Data Science and Machine Learning Platform at Mastercard Identity.

Candice will be joined by UBC Sauder Professor Steven Shechter from the Operations and Logistics Division for a conversation about how business analytics professionals can navigate a field that continues to evolve rapidly. The event will open with brief remarks from Dean Darren Dahl before the fireside chat begins, and the discussion will touch on:

  • How to translate complex data into strategic action
  • Balancing automation with human judgment
  • And using curiosity as a catalyst for breakthrough thinking and innovation
  • And more!

After the fireside chat, attendees will have time to reconnect with peers and meet others in the business analytics community over light refreshments and beverages.

The event will be held at the offices of MNP, who generously donated the venue.

Who should attend?

UBC Sauder alumni and community members with careers, education, experience or interest in business analytics.

Registration closes on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Directions to the venue can be found here

Profiles

Candice Chan, MMOR 2008

Vice President, Data Science & Machine Learning Platform at Mastercard Identity

Candice Chan has always believed data tells a story — and for over two decades, she’s made it her mission to uncover the ones that shape smarter decisions and better outcomes. With an Engineering degree earned in 2004 and a specialization in Operations Research from the University of British Columbia in 2008, she had built a strong foundation in problem-solving and analytical thinking that continues to drive her work today.

Candice’s analytics career started with optimizing healthcare workflows for better efficiency and patient outcomes. She then transitioned to inventory optimization at Boeing, where she also began leveraging Machine Learning for preventive maintenance. Today, she leads a team of Data Scientists and Engineers combating frauds with real-time detection models at Mastercard.

Candice completed the Masters of Management (Operations Research) at UBC Sauder, which was the predecessor to our current Masters of Business Analytics (MBAN) program.

Steven Shechter (Moderator)

Professor, Operations and Logistics Division, UBC Sauder School of Business

Steven Shechter is a Professor in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. He joined UBC in 2006, after receiving his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
