Overview

The Certified Reserve Planner (CRP) designation is designed for professionals involved in reserve fund planning, capital replacement forecasting, and long-term financial modelling for buildings. CRPs typically work with condominium boards, asset managers, engineering firms, and large property portfolios.

Program Requirements

All courses are delivered entirely online and include written materials, online videos, and a Course Resources webpage.

Step 1: Foundational CPD Courses

Students are required to complete the following three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. While it is recommended that these foundational CPD courses be completed before beginning the BUSI courses, they are not a formal prerequisite.

CPD 130 - Residential Valuation Basics

This course introduces the principles and approaches of real estate valuation for the non-appraiser, with an emphasis in residential properties.

CPD 131 - Commercial Appraisal Basics

Follows from CPD 130, with emphasis on commercial properties including apartments, offices, retail, and industrial properties.

CPD 133 - Valuing Residential Condominiums

Learn how legal, physical, and market considerations impact the value of condominium/strata properties.

Step 2: Core BUSI Courses

BUSI 121 is a prerequisite for BUSI 221 and must be successfully completed prior to enrolling in BUSI 221. The remaining BUSI courses may be taken in any order.

BUSI 121 - Foundations of Real Estate Mathematics

This course introduces the techniques of investment and statistical analysis in a real estate context.

BUSI 221 - Real Estate Finance in a Canadian Context

This course examines the Canadian mortgage market and applies real estate financial analysis to loan underwriting, refinancing, and financing methods.

BUSI 400 -  Residential Property Analysis

This course is designed to give real estate professionals, particularly appraisers, a working knowledge of the physical aspects of residential properties.

BUSI 401 - Commercial Property Analysis

This course covers the underlying theory and techniques used in the design, construction, and inspection of commercial properties.

Step 3: Specialized CPD Courses

CPD 891 is a prerequisite for CPD 899 and must be successfully completed prior to enrollment in CPD 899.

CPD 891 - Fundamentals of Reserve Fund Planning

Provides a comprehensive overview of the underlying theory, principles, and techniques required for preparing reserve fund studies

CPD 899 - Reserve Fund Planning Guided Case Study

Guides students through the process of choosing a condominium/strata property and completing a comprehensive reserve fund study report to plan its future financial strategy.

Learning assessments vary depending on the course:

  • CPD 130, 131, and 133 each include a multiple-choice final quiz
  • BUSI 121, 221, 400, and 401 each include weekly multiple-choice assessments, two written projects, and a final written examination
  • CPD 891 includes weekly multiple-choice assessments, one written project, and a final written examination
  • CPD 899 includes a series of written projects culminating in a final written term project

Expect to commit 7-10 hours for each of CPD 130, 131, 133, and at least ten hours per lesson for the remaining courses. CPD courses are completed on demand; they can be registered for and started at any time, and must be completed within one year of enrolling. BUSI courses run on a term basis and must be completed over the course of the term (approximately four months), with the possibility to transfer terms if needed. Students can decide how many courses to take at a time, although pre-requisites may determine the order that courses must be taken. Assistance with the course material is available from our course tutors, through email or telephone. In addition, there are many other helpful resources available to students through the Real Estate Division course resources webpages.
