UBC Sauder is excited to recognize six exceptional award recipients who have made a significant impact on the school. These individuals embody the values of rigour, respect and responsibility, elevating the experiences of UBC Sauder students, alumni and the broader community.
Each of these employees are passionate about and excel in their roles and portfolios. We are truly grateful to have them as part of the UBC Sauder community. On behalf of everyone at UBC Sauder, here's to these exceptional individuals!

Rising Star Award
Maya Bird (She/Her/Hers)
Recruitment Sales Specialist, Recruitment and Admissions (R&A)

In one year, Maya has become her team's Salesforce subject-matter expert, significantly enhancing the end-to-end applicant journey and the team’s ability to address and resolve complex issues.

Strengthened numerous interdepartmental relationships with Marketing and Communications (MarCom), Business Technology Management Office (BTMO), Office of Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) and UBC IT teams to successfully execute many complex, high impact projects.

Embraced new challenges with enthusiasm and strategic insight, including the Alumni Volunteer Pilot, and UBC Sauder’s Marketing Cloud implementation for R&A.

Played a major role in planning, marketing and executing high-profile initiatives that have strengthened UBC Sauder’s reputation, including events such as the Product Design in the Age of AI event and the UBC Sauder Spring Employer Showcase 2025.

Represented the school at the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (CPHR) HR conference & Expo and Web Summit 2025, engaging hundreds of professionals to promote UBC Sauder’s professional programs.

Played integral roles on numerous committees, ranging from Professional Growth's Book Club to the 2025 Dean's Dinner Planning Committee.
"I feel incredibly honoured to receive this award, and at such an early point in my journey with UBC Sauder. Moving to a new country and starting a new career path was made easier by the incredible people I have the pleasure of working with and learning from. This role and organization have given me the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects with passionate people within my own team and from teams across UBC Sauder. Responsible for the conception and launch of the Investment Banking access Pathway (IB-AP), a truly innovative initiative that highlights Iane's exceptional leadership, creativity and external service excellence.

Demonstrated extraordinary initiative in uniting multiple parts of the UBC Sauder community, ranging from Finance faculty to academic advisors to Bachelor of Commerce Career Strategists.

Lesley Wilkins Service Excellence Award

Consistently demonstrated exceptional support and service for our faculty and students, helping build the best learning environments possible with the fewest barriers.

Opened the door for Learning Services and Office of Student Academic Service (OSAS) to access to enhanced data insights and improve communication efficiency with faculty and by redesigning the exam coordination system.

Spearheaded research and testing into AI-driven platforms, helping Sauder explore how generative AI can enhance teaching and learning.

Profoundly shaped the experience of our students, her team's culture and the broader Sauder community through her belief in fostering an inclusive, equitable and welcoming environment at UBC Sauder.

By approaching every aspect of student engagement through an EDI lens, investing time in training student organizers and volunteers, Visha worked to create spaces that are accessible, culturally sensitive and inclusive.

Serves as a critical liaison between the UBC Sauder EDI Committee and student groups, ensuring that student voices, perspectives and achievements remain visible and celebrated.

Mike Lakusiak (He/Him/His)

As part of Professional Growth's recent restructuring, Mike led his team to tackle any problems that arose, with his ability to adapt quickly, learn fast and anticipate needs of the unit.

Demonstrates ownership of responsibility, by stepping up whenever and wherever needed, ensuring that no work falls through the cracks.

Shows up every day as a responsible leader and as a role model of resilience and emotional intelligence, by maintaining a high standard of professionalism while holding space for others to contribute their best by creating a secure and motivating workplace where people feel supported and valued.
